Smoke Alarms
- You should place smoke alarms near bedrooms and at least one on every floor.
- Make sure to test the batteries at least once a year.
- When installing smoke alarms, place them high on the wall or on the ceiling. If you install them on a wall, place the top of the alarm no closer than 4 inches from the ceiling.
Safe Cooking
- Do NOT leave food unattended on the stove.
- Keep dangling clothes away from burners and keep curtains and other combustibles away from the stove.
- Make sure the stove is off and small appliances are unplugged before going to bed.
Safe Heating Practices
- Place heaters where they will not be knocked over easily.
- Keep heaters at a safe distance from all combustibles.
- Plug heaters directly into a wall socket, do NOT use any extension cords.
- Unplug any heaters when they are not being used.
- When using a woodstove or fireplace, always use a protective screen and clean the interiors, hearths, and chimneys yearly.
Safe Smoking Practices
- Never smoke while in bed.
- Keep ashtrys away from upholstered furniture and curtains.
- Never leave buring cigarettes unattended.
Other Home Saftey
- Consider installing residential fire sprinklers.
- Replace wiring if frayed or cracked.
- Avoid overloading outlets.
- Keep candles away from paper and fabrics. Also, extinguish all candles when leaving room or going to sleep.
Home Fire Escape Plan
- Develop and practice a fire escape plan. Draw a diagram of the home. Make all windows and doors. Plan two routes out of each room.
- Have a safe meeting place outside of the home and never go back inside.
